CIVIL RIGHTS
In this packet students will explore topics and themes related to The Civil Rights Movement, a decades long struggle by Black Americans to end institutionalized racism in the United States in the 1950s-1960s. People like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, the Little Rock Nine, the Freedom Riders, and others, fought to end formal and informal segregation and gain equal voting rights for Black Americans.
SEGREGATION & OPPORTUNITY
In this packet students will explore topics and sources regarding segregation in the United States. Racial segregation began after the Civil War when slavery was abolished and did not officially end until late mid to late 1900s.
CULTURE & TRADITION
In this packet students will explore aspects of Culture and Tradition in the African American community. Both in the voices interviews and the overall context of time African Americans have engaged in music and sports.
THE GREAT MIGRATION
In this packets students will explore topics and themes relating to the Great Migration. The Great Migration was the relocation of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to cities in the North and West from 1916 to 1970.
PRISON REFORM
In this packet students will explore topics regarding prison reform. The United States has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, and the use of mandatory minimum sentences has led to an overly burdened system. People of color are incarcerated at higher rates in a system that does not prepare prisoners for the outside world once they are released.
